Planting Lettuce Seeds - Ruby

When to Plant Lettuce Seeds

Lettuces thrive in cooler seasons, and planting during the heat of summer should be avoided. However, many varieties grow quickly, allowing multiple harvests in both spring and late summer.

Where to Plant Lettuce Seeds

Lettuce thrives in full sun, but in hot climates, partial shade can be beneficial. Select a location with well-draining soil for optimal growth.

How to Plant Lettuce Seeds

To start lettuce seeds, either sow directly outdoors or indoors in containers. Sprinkle seeds in rows or containers, then cover with a thin layer of soil. For indoor planting, cover containers with plastic to create a greenhouse effect. Sprouts typically emerge within 7-10 days. Once sprouted, remove the plastic and provide ample light. Transplant seedlings into individual containers after they have a few true leaves. Harden off seedlings about a week before outdoor planting. For outdoor beds, space leaf lettuce about 4 inches apart, loose-head types 8 inches apart, and firm-head types 16 inches apart.

How to Harvest Lettuce

Harvest lettuce when it’s full size but not fully mature to avoid bitterness. For leaf lettuce, remove outer leaves, letting the inner ones grow. For Butterhead and Romaine, either cut the plant or pull it out when ready. For Crisphead varieties, harvest when the center is firm. Crisphead types are less tolerant of heat. Lettuce can withstand cold but should be protected from wind. Maintain consistent moisture in well-drained soil, as lettuce has high water needs. If leaves start wilting, increase watering. Hand weed carefully to avoid disturbing shallow roots.
