About Carnation Seeds

Carnations are among the world's most popular flowers, often seen in floral arrangements showcasing vibrant, unnatural colors. However, this stunning deep purple variety is all-natural! Its intense hue, so dark it's dubbed the King of Blacks, makes it a favorite among gardeners and florists alike.

Planting Carnation Seeds

When to Plant Carnation Seeds

You can start Carnation seeds indoors in spring, 6 weeks to 2 months before the last frost. If sowing them directly outdoors, wait until after the last frost. In mild winters, sow Carnation seeds outside from spring until early fall. They grow as perennials in frost-free zones and as annuals where winters are cold.

Where to Plant Carnation Seeds

Carnations don't need much water except during hot months. Soaker hoses work well, but be careful not to overwater, which can cause yellow foliage. They require 4 to 5 hours of sunlight daily and prefer fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline (pH 6.75) soil.

How to Plant Carnation Seeds

If starting indoors, cover Carnation seeds thinly with soil and keep them moist. Plant 2 to 3 seeds per pot or cell. Germination usually occurs within 2 weeks if temperatures are between 65-70°F. After germination, move seedlings to a sunny, cool place. They can be transplanted to your garden a week or two before the final frost.

How to Care for Carnation

Carnations don't need much water except during hot months. Soaker hoses are ideal to ensure proper watering. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to yellow foliage.
